We use 2 different types of carrier oil in our scrubs because we want to give our customers the option to choose the best for their skins' needs. In addition, there are many customers who are unable to use products containing nuts due to allergies and intolerances.
Sweet almond oil is produced from edible almonds, which are selectively cultivated for their sweet taste. It is a mild, hypoallergenic oil, rich in Vitamin E, monounsaturated fatty acids, proteins, potassium and zinc. The oil is an excellent emollient, fully absorbs easily into the skin and works to lock in moisture. Sweet almond oil is suitable for all skin types and is great for soothing, nourishing and softening dry and dull skin.
Extracted from the seeds of grapes, grapeseed oil is rich in beta-carotene and vitamins C, D and E, all of which are believed to help reduce wrinkles, stretch marks and scars. The oil also acts to balance both the dry and oily patches on the skin, can assist in skin repair and offers antiseptic as well as mildly astringent properties. Grapeseed oil is high in linoleic acid which is important for skin health, doesn’t clog pores and, due to its light and thin consistency, quickly absorbs into the skin. Grapeseed oil is suitable for all skin types but is most often used by people with sensitive and/or acne prone skin as well as those with oily skin.
Raw sugar is a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the environment into the skin, so can help hydrate your skin and keep moisture in. It is also a natural source of glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that penetrates the skin and breaks down the “glue” that bonds skin cells, encouraging cell turnover. Raw sugar is a mild exfoliant and is more hydrating than salt, making it ideal for super-sensitive or dry skin.
Produced through solar evaporation, salt helps to cleanse pores, balance oil production and prevent bacteria that can initiate breakouts and acne. It is also full of minerals which are beneficial to the skin and is an ideal treatment for skin detoxification. Since salt granules provide a rougher scrub than the gentler sugar granules, salt scrubs are a good choice for areas where skin can get especially dry and calloused.
It’s a good idea to use the scrub in the shower so the coffee grounds will easily wash down the drain – wet grounds are not something that will sweep up easily.
Dampen your skin under a running shower and then step out of the water flow (or turn the shower off). Rub the scrub in circular motions, massaging the oils over your entire body. You may want to focus on problem areas and don’t forget your hands and feet.
Leave the scrub on your skin for up to 5 minutes before rinsing off under running water.
Use more, smaller amounts when putting the scrub onto your skin. If you grab too much at once, you may lose a lot of your scrub on the shower floor.
Make sure your skin is damp. Using the scrub on dry skin may be too harsh – especially if you have sensitive skin.
Scrubs do not rinse out of hair easily so try to keep your hair out of the way while you are pampering your skin.
If you are particularly vigorous, your skin will may become red from all the scrubbing—especially if you have fair skin. You may want to give your skin time to calm if you are going out, or pamper yourself in the evening when you can just relax afterwards.
There is nothing better than a back rub/scratch/scrub, especially as it is an area we don’t often pay much attention to. If you have a significant other, trade back scrubs. It’s not only fun, it feels fantastic both during and after. If you are running solo, reach your back by putting the scrub on a shower back scrubber. It works like a charm.
As many of the essential and carrier oils are quite rich, using the scrubs on your face may lead to breakouts, particularly if you have sensitive skin. You may want to patch test a small area first.
We recommend that you use the scrub in the shower, simply because the coffee grounds will not dissolve in water like salt and sugar. If you want to relax in the bath and scrub at the same time, be aware that you may have to rinse yourself and your bath down when you're finished.
As we do not use any preservatives in our scrubs, we recommend that you use your scrub within 10-12 months of the date of production. As our scrubs are made to order, you don't have to worry that they have been sitting in warehouse storage somewhere for months and are coming to the end of their shelf life.
In place of a single large pouch or container which holds the entire scrub (which is how most other scrubs are sold) we have divided our scrub into 4, single use pouches. Why?
A 200g scrub should give you at least 4 really good full body scrubs. As the maximum recommended scrubs per week is 2 for salt and 3 for sugar, you will have the pouch sitting in your shower for a fortnight or even months if you don’t scrub regularly. Paper pouches become soggy, unsightly and hard to use.
Each time you scoop your wet hand into a tub or pouch containing your scrub, you introduce water into the product. If a product is completely anhydrous (contains no water) this may encourage bacteria to grow in your scrub.
Single use pouches should overcome these issues. Plus, you may want to share the scrubs with others and you can now do this hygienically!
